First Generation College Student, East Coast, Immigrant, Took a Gap Year, Worked Before Gradschool
I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the US about 10 years ago. I am the oldest of four and a first generation college student. I was a "traditional" grad school applicant with undergrad research experience and received admission before graduating college. However, due to unexpected circumstances, I ended up taking 2 gap years, where I worked a few jobs in different medical settings. I have come to realize that people's paths to and through graduate school are often non-linear and filled with unique challenges, but the process of navigating through these challenges with an open mind is what bring forth refined strengths and motivations in our scientific and personal journeys.
